In 1978 I co-authored Fluidized-Bed Energy Technology: Coming To A Boil
for a New York consultancy called INFORM. New Scientist
published
'To bed betimes', and Electrical Review
'Coal comfort in fluidised beds'.
In 1981 the Guardian
published 'In the hot bed of controversy', and in 1989
'How to make the coal flow cleaner'.
In 1983, in Science 83, then
published by the American
Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), I
described 'A New Way To Burn'.
In 1987, 1990 and 1993 Financial Times Business Information published
my three book-length Management Reports on advanced coal technology.
In 1992, in a Chatham
House book on Emerging Energy Technologies, I
contributed a chapter on 'Clean
Coal'. By the mid-1990s, however, as the climate issue became more worrying, and
in the face of complete coal industry indifference,
I decided I was wasting my time trying to help them. The evidence is now unambiguous:
coal is endangering the planet.
