To imagine the awesome political power
wielded by the plutonium people is now difficult. Considering the
money, time and skilled staff they squandered without scruple for
so many years, instead of being showered with honours many might
have wound up in jail. They did not. But the harm they did
endures. The world is awash in plutonium, its whereabouts
uncertain, its security dubious, its potential for devastation
unabated. The next time someone assures you that nuclear
technology is essential and benign, that nuclear power will keep
the lights on, remember the plutonium people. That was their
story, too. Thanks to the Nuclear
Control Institute, which holds the copyright, you can once
again read The Plutonium Business.
